It integrates product, process, and plant‑model databases, leveraging advanced visualization, simulation, and document management to enhance product quality and the quality and dynamic performance of manufacturing processes—thereby boosting profitability, improving planning accuracy, shortening time‑to‑market, fostering transparent communication, standardizing planning workflows, and enabling effective knowledge management.

At the same time, it integrates emerging technologies such as rudimentary smart tools and advanced intelligent systems to create an efficient, energy‑saving, green, environmentally friendly, and human‑centric manufacturing facility.
Smart factories have attained autonomous capabilities, enabling them to collect, analyze, reason, and plan. Leveraging holistic visualization technologies for reasoning and prediction, and employing simulation and multimedia tools, they augment real-world environments to visualize design and manufacturing processes. Each component within the system can self‑configure into an optimal architecture, exhibiting coordination, reconfiguration, and scalability. Moreover, the system has acquired self‑learning and self‑maintenance capabilities. The smart factory framework proposed by renowned business process management expert Professor August-Wilhelm Scheer underscores the pivotal role of MES systems in building smart factories.
