As the ancients said, “One is born in adversity and dies in ease.” Without a profound sense of crisis, King Goujian of Yue would never have endured hardship and humiliation to avenge his defeat; and during Japan’s full‑scale invasion of China, that same acute sense of crisis united the entire Chinese nation, enabling it to vanquish aircraft and artillery with nothing but rifles and millet. A sense of crisis can propel a nation from decline to resurgence.
